The Bohlsen watermill is a watermill on the Gerdau River , which is located in the Bohlsen district of the Gerdau municipality in the Lüneburg Heath . Today it is the only watermill still in commercial operation in the Uelzen district . It is the seat of the nationally known milling and baking company Bohlsener Mühle , which processes organically grown grain.

history

A mill on the Gerdau was first mentioned in a document in Bohlsen in 1265, when three water wheels drove a grain, an oil and a bake mill. The history of today's Bohlsen watermill also goes back to the 13th century. When the mill got its first turbine made of wood in 1852, the mill building was made of red brick. In the last few decades, some new buildings, such as granaries, bakery and storage buildings, were built for the mill. After the miller's son took over the business from his father in 1979 , he switched to processing organically grown grain. At that time the mill had two employees and the delivery was carried out by two farmers with organic-biological operating methods. In 1983 a bakery for organic products was built on the mill premises, which in 1989 became a wholemeal bakery. The now considerably enlarged mill operation set up a larger baking plant on the outskirts in 2004.

The Lower Saxony Mill Road leads past the Bohlsen watermill. The Mühlenhof with its historical buildings from the 19th century as an ensemble still presents a coherent picture today. The rustic-looking mill area with its preserved weir and larger trees is idyllically situated on the river.

The mill and baking company Bohlsener Mühle, which is based on the mill premises today, is a natural food manufacturer with around 180 employees, who supplies the natural food trade nationwide with a range of around 200 finished products. Raw materials are also supplied to processors across Europe. Today around 200 organic farmers from the region supply the mill with grain. The use of renewable energies such as hydropower is part of the company's concept. In 2015 it received the German Sustainability Award as the most sustainable SME .
