The community is located between Bienenbüttel in the north and Bad Bevensen in the south, directly on the B 4 . The Ilmenau flows through the municipality .

In a clockwise direction the municipalities of Bienenbüttel and Altenmedingen , the city of Bad Bevensen and the municipality of Natendorf .

The description of the coat of arms reads: In silver a green three mountain with the middle mountain almost reaching the upper edge of the shield. On top of it a golden freight wagon with three golden bales of goods over a silver wave base.

- Rifle club Jelmstorf and surroundings e. V.
The shooting club was founded in 1926 and existed until 1939. It was re-established on March 11, 1977. In 1978 the community made a building available to the shooting club on the old sports field as a shooting club. - Sports club SV Jelmstorf
- Jelmstorf volunteer fire brigade founded in 1912. The local fire chief is Stefan Burmester and Christian Reimann is his deputy. The fire station is located at Ziegeleistraße 1. The fire guards are equipped with a TSF from Ziegler / Opel.
