Location of Rockenmühle in Lower Saxony

Rockenmühle is a residential area in the municipality of Jelmstorf in the Lower Saxony district of Uelzen and belongs to the district of Addenstorf.

Geography and transport links

Rockenmühle is located southwest of the core town of Jelmstorf on the connecting road between Varendorf and Seedorf (K49). The federal highway 4 runs east. The Barum-Bienenbütteler Mühlenbach flows through Rockenmühle and flows into the Ilmenau at Bienenbüttel .

Rockenmühle is connected to the surrounding towns by a bus line.

The mill and the residential building of the former watermill are located in a depression opposite the mill pond, which is fed by the water of the B.-B.-Mühlenbach and its own springs.

History of the Rockenmühle after 1838

Rockenmühle was built as a grain mill, but it was not only used as a grain mill, but also as a boke mill and an oil mill. Over the years, Rockenmühle has had an eventful history. Rockenmühle at the current location was built in 1838. After several attempts, Johann Heinrich Heitsch, son of Carl Wilhelm Heitsch, was able to rebuild the mill in 1838, which had previously been located at a point further down the river at the »Diekwisch« meadow. Then the mill passed into the possession of his son Heinrich August Heitsch. Since his marriage remained without male descendants, his daughter Mathilde got the mill, who married a Johann Kiehn in 1896. Their daughter Elfriede in turn married a Hermann Pulver.

In 1930 Mrs. Helmy Kiehn applied to continue the pub.

In 1933, the farmer Alfred Hallensleben from Varendorf bought Rockenmühle, along with the pub and associated land. After his death, his wife Alma Hallensleben took over the Rockenmühle; the inn was temporarily leased. The daughters Elisabeth and Renate inherited the Rockenmühle along with all the lands. Rockenmühle was leased in the post-war years and had to "survive" varied tenants. In addition to tenants who ran a pub, Rockenmühle also enjoyed a somewhat disreputable reputation at times, as the "red light" was introduced.

Solidere tenants followed: the composer Clive Westlake and his family lived in Rockenmühle for some time, a beauty establishment followed and since 1993 the mill and the lands have been privately owned by the family.

Technology of the rock mill

Rockenmühle, technology inside the mill

Initially, Rockenmühle was operated with a water wheel; for this purpose, the pond was dammed and the power of the dammed water was used in the surge operation . The technology was later modernized and the drive was carried out by turbines, which were also powered by water power. The mill wheel could be seen on the bank for many years.
