The Wilhelmshaven "JadeWeserAirport" (former Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield ) is a commercial airfield on the southern outskirts of Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony .
location
The airfield is located in the Cäciliengroden south of the village of Mariensiel in the area of the municipality of Sande and is only separated from the mudflat areas of the Jadebusen by a dike line .
Infrastructure
JadeWeserAirport has two runways and eight aircraft hangars and is classified as a commercial airfield. The airfield is equipped with appropriate approach lights for non-precision approaches. It is approved for powered aircraft up to 14,000 kg and helicopters up to 20,000 kg as well as for powered gliders and ultralight aircraft. The airfield is operated by Flugplatzgesellschaft Wilhelmshaven-Friesland mbH, which is owned equally by the city of Wilhelmshaven and the district of Friesland .
The central traffic management of WIKING Helikopter Service GmbH is located at JadeWeserAirport . On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, the company carries out the pilotage service in the German Bight .
The Motorfluggruppe Wilhelmshaven-Friesland eV, founded in 1963, is also based at the airfield. In addition to sightseeing and photo flights, the members of the association also offer flights to the nearby East Frisian Islands , e.g. B. to Wangerooge , Langeoog , Norderney or Borkum .
history
In 1974 the airfield received a special honor with the song Über den Wolken by Reinhard Mey . The song describes the thoughts of a person who stands on an airfield and watches a plane take off. According to Mey, the song is about the Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield, where he also acquired his flight license.
In 2007 the Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield celebrated its 80th birthday. In time for this anniversary, the approval for operation according to instrument flight rules (IFR) with the required runway and approach lights was granted for around 2 million euros . In addition, the existing runway 02/20 in the direction of Wilhelmshaven (northeast) was extended to a total of 1,459 meters.
In 2009, the airfield was named "JadeWeserAirport" as part of the JadeWeserPort port construction project.
In September 2013 it was announced that a central trading post for used helicopters and private jets would be built on the airfield. The "German Private Jet Group AG", founded in 2010 at Düsseldorf Airport , wanted to start this project at the airport in October 2013 and advertised on the Internet with parking spaces for 124 jets and 152 helicopters on the 60 to 70 hectare site. However, after massive protests from local residents, the project was not pursued any further.
