history

As the name suggests, Mariensiel is a former Sielort . The Mariensiel was created after the All Saints Flood of 1570 , during which the Kniphausersiel, which had previously been used to drain the Maade , was destroyed. The new sewer drained the Maade directly into the Jade Bay. The Siel is named after Fräulein Maria von Jever , the then regent of the Jever lordship , to whose domain the land around the Siel belonged. The sewer system has been changed, repaired and even rebuilt several times over the centuries. Today's stone sewer system was created in 1876. At that time the costs totaled 251,000 marks, of which the German Reich took over 120,000 marks.
A small harbor town quickly formed around the Siel and traded in local products. In 1867 the place was connected to the railway line from Oldenburg to the newly founded naval establishment in the "Royal Prussian Jade Area", later Wilhelmshaven. Mariensiel profited significantly from the major Wilhelmshaven construction projects of the time, u. a. the construction of Fort Mariensiel , the construction of the Ems-Jade Canal and the associated crossing of the canal over the Mariensieler Tief and the great Wilhelmshaven port expansion at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1899, the Mehrtens & Co. brickworks was founded in Mariensiel , which produced bricks in the village until 1965. The bricks were also transported to the customers by ship.
With the Wilhelmshaven port expansion in 1904, however, the problem arose that the external depression leading to the Mariensiel was increasingly silted up due to the changed flow conditions caused by the new dyke line and the expenses for maintaining the access became higher and higher. Therefore, the sewer was sealed in 1963. The drainage took place in the meantime via the Rüstersiel . In 1983 the sewage system, which was no longer in use and in need of major renovation, was completely overhauled and placed under monument protection as a monument . In 1984 the historic sewer was handed over to the "Mariensiel Citizens' Association", which has been taking care of the sewer system ever since.
In 1921 the Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield was built in neighboring Cäciliengroden . In 1977 the Mariensiel train station on the Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven railway line fell victim to the wrecking ball. The ever lower number of passengers on the train made the station superfluous.
On November 7th, 2009, Mariensiel celebrated the handover of the historic Siel to the “Mariensiel Citizens' Association”.
traffic
The Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven railway runs through Mariensiel. The Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Mariensiel . In the north of the village, the Ems-Jade Canal runs from Emden via Aurich to Wilhelmshaven. The easternmost lock on the canal is the Mariensiel lock , which connects the canal with the ports of Wilhelmshaven .

The sculpture path was laid out in the Expo year 2000 and runs along the cycle path on the sea dike from Mariensiel to Dangast . The seven sculptures were created during a sculpture symposium and were created by seven different artists. The sculptures represent the seven days of creation history. The sculpture on the dike near Mariensiel represents the 1st day of creation - light and darkness - and was created by the Bremen sculptor Nicolai Deppe.
