The Fort Mariensiel (Fort III) was as part of the fortress plan Wilhelmshaven a Fort to protect the Prussian naval base in Wilhelmshaven . It is located in Mariensiel in the municipality of Sande just outside Wilhelmshaven near the Maade and the Ems-Jade Canal .

history

The Maadeforts Rüstersiel , Mariensiel and Schaar were advertised on August 4, 1876 in the Wilhelmshavener Zeitung . The construction work was completed in 1880. Through a newly built perimeter road Fort Mariensiel was connected to the forts Schaar and Rüstersiel, she was with light railway tracks equipped. Their course corresponded to that of today's streets An der Vogelwarte, Dodoweg and Kurt-Schumacher-Straße. During the First World War, the Roffhausen flak battery was located northwest of the facility. To the south existed the flak battery Sande and to the east the flak battery Munitionshof.

Armament

The Mariensiel Fort was initially equipped with ten 15 cm L22 cannons. There were also eight 12-cm cannons.
