The heavy flak battery Schillig was a bunkered position of the naval flak in the north of Wilhelmshaven during the Second World War .

Organizational integration

The German Bight Coast Commander was responsible for the coastal defense . The battery belonged as part of the II. Marine Flakbrigade to the Wilhelmshaven section. The flak battery belonged to Navy Flak Division 282, whose Flakuntergruppenkommando Nord was in Hooksiel .

Location and structure

Position of the flak batteries in the Wilhelmshaven section

The battery was built on the bunkers of the former Watt battery. Due to the very limited space available, the four high-rise gun bunkers and the central control station were built in a row next to each other. The facility was equipped with radar sets of the Würzburg and Flum types as well as light weapons for self-protection.

history

During the peacetime, the 8.8 cm anti-aircraft battery with ceiling shields and the 15 cm sea target battery in Fort Schillig (dike battery) were used for training naval artillerymen. Since the flak battery in the fort no longer met the new requirements of the time due to its unprotected system, a provisional 8.8 cm flak battery was installed first. In 1940/41 a new bunker battery was built on top of the former watt battery . The new anti-aircraft battery thus had an underground bunker system. On April 6, 1943, the battery was converted to 10.5 cm guns .
