Position of the flak batteries in the Wilhelmshaven section

The heavy flak battery Tirpitzhafen was a bunkered position of the naval flak in Wilhelmshaven during the Second World War .

Location and structure

The Tirpitzhafen battery was behind the Banter sea dyke at the height of the Rüstringer ferry. For self-protection there was a 3.7 cm flak stand and a 2 cm flak stand on the sea dike . The four gun beds were arranged around a central control station 1, which had a range finder. To the east of the facility was an accommodation bunker for the battery crew. The ammunition bunker was embedded in the Banter Sea dike about 250 meters southwest of the battery. The ammunition could be transported in sections on the existing tracks (Mariensiel-Fliegerdeich-Schleuseninsel). The kitchen, canteen, a common room, an office and the accommodation of the battery chief as well as the officers and NCOs were located directly on the railroad track in several barracks.

Organizational integration

The German Bight Coast Commander was responsible for the coastal defense . The battery belonged as part of the II. Marine Flakbrigade to the Wilhelmshaven section. The flak battery belonged to the Marine Flak division 232, whose Flakuntergruppenkommando Hafen was in the Westwerft.

history

construction

Construction work on the battery began in the summer of 1939. Four concrete beds, which closed off on the ground floor, were built. When the war began, the battery was ready for use, but construction work was not completed until December 1939.

commitment

In the spring of 1941 the 10.5 cm anti-aircraft guns were retrofitted with ceiling shields. Control center 2 was built into the dike as a bunker south of the battery and camouflaged as a house. This was expanded in the late summer of 1942 and equipped with a new distance measuring device and command device 41 L, and a FuMG 201 Type 41 G (gA) was installed. The control center was thus state-of-the-art. Training courses for gun operators were held in the battery.

post war period

The facility was blown up after the war, ruins are still preserved today.
