The 2 cm Flak 30 was an anti -aircraft gun used by the Wehrmacht during World War II .
history
development
The development of the 2 cm Flak 30 goes back to the early 1930s. Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty, Rheinmetall was not allowed to develop anti-aircraft weapons in Germany. That is why she took over the Solothurn cartridge factory in 1930 and switched production. The Solothurn Flak MK-ST-5 was developed there and sold on the world market. It was introduced into the Navy in 1934 and the Luftwaffe in 1935 as a 2 cm Flak 30.
The 2 cm Flak 30 was produced under license by the following companies :
- Havelwerk in Brandenburg
- Brennabor in Brandenburg
- Gustloff factories in Meiningen and Suhl
- Röchling-Buderus in Wetzlar
- Ostmarkwerk in Vienna
- Stübgen in Erfurt (only mounts)
- Benteler works in Bielefeld
description
The 2 cm Flak 30 was a fully automatic anti -aircraft gun with a cruising weight of 890 kilograms. It was moved on a single-axle trailer in a motorized train.
The version for the Kriegsmarine was called the 2 cm Flak C / 30 . It was mainly used on the Type II and Type VII submarines . In some skirmishes against aircraft, the tendency to jam resulted in the submarine not being able to defend itself. The magazine, which holds comparatively little ammunition with only 20 rounds, also contributed to this. The low impact power was a disadvantage in the fight against bombers, the weapon was hardly used for defense tasks on land. Only older torpedo bombers (ie double-deckers ) could be reliably intercepted with it.
The 2-cm Flak 38 as the successor model was improved in many points, for example the cause of the jam was removed, the recoil was diverted and the magazine was equipped with forty rounds per barrel.
ammunition
The following 20 mm ammunition variants were available for the 2 cm Flak 30 :
- Panzerranate 39 (PzGr. 39: 0.33 kilograms)
- Panzerranate 40 (PzGr. 40: 0.14 kilograms)
- High explosive grenade (SpGr: 0.3 kilograms).
The 20 × 138 mm B grenade cartridge was used, the projectiles were 85 mm long and were shot at a muzzle velocity of 830 (PzGr) to 900 meters per second and a rate of fire of 2.5 rounds per second. The wear limit of a tube was reached after approx. 10,000 to 12,000 shots.
