The 10 cm cannon 17 ( K 17 for short ) was a field cannon that was used by the German army in World War I , and by the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht in World War II .

history

The K 17 had the same mount as its predecessor, the 10 cm cannon 14 . The new development was necessary because the army demanded a greater range, which was implemented with a barrel extension from L / 35 to L / 45 caliber lengths . Since this increased the weight significantly, the K 17 now had to be driven by horse-drawn carriage with two loads (pipe wagon and carriage ). It was introduced into the German army in 1917 and taken over into the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic after the war .

After the end of the western campaign in 1940, when the need for guns for coastal defense increased enormously, the K 17 was also pulled out of the reserve depots and used.

The cannon weighed 3,300 kilograms on the march and could fire 18.5-kilogram HE shells up to 16,500 meters. The ammunition had to be loaded separately (first the projectile, then the cartridge case ), which reduced the rate of fire.
