The 10.5 cm light gun 42 ( LG 42 for short ) was a recoilless gun used by the Wehrmacht in World War II .

history

The LG 42 was a direct further development of the 10.5 cm light gun 40 . The development and production of the pre-series models was carried out in Düsseldorf- Derendorf at Rheinmetall-Borsig. Series production then ran at Dürkoppwerke in Bielefeld .

Due to its special characteristics, the LG 42 was recoil-free and, broken down into four loads, could be dropped from aircraft with parachutes. Within two minutes it was then reassembled into a ready-to-fire gun. Another transport option was to hang the gun in tubular steel transport containers under the fuselage of an aircraft or to transport it in gliders. Because of these properties, it was mainly used in paratrooper and mountain fighter divisions. The life of a barrel firing 14.74 or 14.81 kilograms projectiles was approximately 10,000 rounds.

The LG 42/1 version was built with a light metal mount and the LG 42/2 with a welded steel mount.

Museum reception

A light gun 42 is on display in the defense technology study collection in Koblenz .
