The Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung (WTS) (also called Wehrtechnisches Museum Koblenz ) of the Bundeswehr in Koblenz is one of the largest technical exhibitions in Germany . Your focus is on defense technology .

The study collection was founded in 1962 and built up by the military historian Arnold Wirtgen . Since 1995 the management has been with his son Rolf Wirtgen .

It has been located in the Langemarck barracks in Koblenz since 1982 and is assigned to the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw - formerly Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement). It still serves to train soldiers in the Bundeswehr and to train future engineers in the armaments sector. B. also illustrative material for the preparation of foreign assignments. In addition, the WTS collects devices, equipment and literature that document the development of defense technology. She also collects a selection of test vehicles and prototypes that illustrate the BAAINBw's development work.

The WTS is open to the public. It is not a museum, but offers a seldom-found abundance of illustrative material on the development of armaments, devices, equipment and uniforms from the early 19th century onwards, with a focus on the German Armed Forces.

future

As part of the preparations for the 2011 Federal Garden Show in Koblenz, discussions were held about relocating the collection, as the barracks area should be redesigned. A move to the Military History Museum of the German Armed Forces in Dresden was also considered. The Federal Defense Minister Jung visited the WTS on July 1, 2008 and announced the whereabouts of the collection in Koblenz. On November 14th, 2008, the then Mayor of Koblenz, Eberhard Schulte-Wissermann, in his capacity as chairman of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the WTS, announced the move of the collection to the technical area west of the former Fritsch barracks on the plateau in front of the fortress Ehrenbreitstein known. In July 2008, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate expressed its willingness to take over the conversion costs of a WTS target location within Koblenz. These plans have failed, but the future of the facility is assured.

According to a notification from the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces , the WTS will be relocated to the Metternich branch (Wasserplatz) of Defense Technical Service 41 in Koblenz-Metternich . The project is in the planning phase.
