The Defense Technical Service for Land-based Vehicle Systems, Engineer and Troop Technology ( WTD 41 ) in Trier-Kürenz ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is one of six Defense Technical Services that are part of the Equipment, Information Technology and Use (AIN) division in the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and use of the Bundeswehr (formerly Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement ) belongs. The area on the Grüneberg has a size of around 200 hectares. The office was set up in 1957 as test center 41 and has been on the Grüneberg since 1960. WTD 41 employs 463 mostly civilian employees, plus 15 trainees (as of 2017) and is certified according to the quality management standard ISO 9001: 2000 .

tasks

The WTD 41 evaluates, examines and tests land-based vehicle systems (wheeled, tracked and special vehicles as well as vehicles with special bodies), pioneer and troop technology of the Bundeswehr with the associated vehicle components. In addition, the WTD 41 supports the armaments industry with its test stands for research assignments from the German Armed Forces and also makes its capabilities available to civil companies.

Different test stands are available for vehicle tests. The test vehicles of the industry are tested on the roller dynamometer under the same environmental conditions, regardless of environmental influences, according to defined standards and regulations. The tests extend to the entire vehicle from the drive train to the performance of the air conditioning in armored devices. For current missions such as in Afghanistan, typical mountain drives are simulated to ensure the stability of current and future vehicles.

For practical driving tests, the examiners have access to an outdoor area with several test courses (gravel course, rough road, off-road course), a 6.8 km long, concreted circuit, a deep water basin and various test tracks. The courses with the names "Washboard", "Variable washboard", "Sinuswellenbahn", "Knüppeldamm", "Schweizer Bahn", "Verwindungsbahn", "Belgisch Block" (cobblestones with potholes) and "Schüttbahn" (with 20 or 30 percent Inclination) allow engineers to test the load capacity of the chassis of tracked or wheeled vehicles. Furthermore, several test tracks, including part of the Trier-Föhren airfield , are available for driving safety tests on wheeled vehicles. Outside facilities are also located at the Baumholder and Fraulautern military training area (Saarland).

In addition, the WTD is to receive a climate center to test vehicles and material at minus 50 degrees to plus 70 degrees and a humidity of 10% to 100%.

The office was founded in 1957 as Erprobungsstelle 41 and relocated to the Trier-Euren airfield in 1959 , followed by the move to the Grüneberg in 1960. After setting up the Federal Office for equipment, information technology and use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) on 1 October 2012, the resolution on January 1, 2013, the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Engineer and General Field Equipment incorporated (WTD 51) in Koblenz in the WTD 41 in Trier. The tasks of WTD 51 were predominantly integrated into the structures of WTD 41, the staff of WTD 51 were formally transferred to WTD 41. In addition, the name of the WTD 41 was changed from the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle for motor vehicles and tanks to the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle for land-based vehicle systems, pioneer and troop technology. The site of WTD 51 in Koblenz-Metternich should be cleared by 2017. In 2012-2014, however, extensive construction and renovation measures were carried out on the site and buildings not yet given to the University of Koblenz / Landau. The outdoor area "Rübenacher Wald" will remain as a branch of the WTD 41.
