Mosellum
The Mosellum - Erlebniswelt - Fischpass Koblenz is a visitor and information center at the Koblenz barrage . As part of the modernization of the fish pass, the Mosellum with an exhibition about the Moselle was built and opened in 2011. The exhibition informs visitors on four levels about the topics of aquatic ecology , fish migration in the Moselle, shipping and power generation .
history
After the fish passage on the right bank of the Moselle of the Koblenz barrage no longer met the requirements, a new system was built between April 2010 and September 2011. At the same time, the Mosellum visitor and information center, which opened on September 29, 2011, was built. Following the motto “form follows function ”, the building, which is rectangular in plan, with a curved roof and a house facade reminiscent of fish scales, was built and built barrier-free, flood-compatible and energy self-sufficient. The construction costs for the Mosellum and the fish pass amounted to around 8.1 million euros. The Mosellum is run by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Food and Forests in Rhineland-Palatinate and the operator is the Structure and Approval Directorate North in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Since the reopening in March 2019, the project management has been with the BUND (Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland, Landesverband Rheinland-Pfalz e.V.), which has expanded the offer in the Mosellum with an environmental educational concept.
Visitor and information center
The exhibition
On the four levels “ shore ”, “ ship ”, “under water” and “view”, visitors are informed about migratory fish and the Moselle. The Mosellum offers gaming tables, interactive exhibits and exhibits of beavers and cormorants to be petted. The exhibition can be explored playfully with a crossword puzzle. Each level can be reached via the elevator, so that the entire exhibition is barrier-free.
Fish pass
The Moselle is a connecting body of water so that fish such as salmon , perch , trout and eel can reach their spawning grounds and growing areas on the upper reaches of the river and its side waters. The fish passage offers three exits and entrances on both the upstream and downstream sides. It enables the fish to cope with the height difference on the south side of the Koblenz barrage via 39 step-shaped basins (2.7 × 3.8 m). The individual pools have a water level difference of 0.15 m, with a pool depth of 1.1 to 1.25 m and a slot width of 0.45 m. The flow rate in the fish passage is around 900 l / s. The facility is equipped with two fish counters as well as catching and control stations. The fish counting system "River-Watch Fishcounter", also called "Vaki-Counter", was manufactured by the Icelandic company Vaki. It is the first of its kind to be used on a federal waterway , and its size and design are unique in the world.
The "blue classroom"
In order to be able to use the Mosellum as an extracurricular learning location, the “blue classroom” is available for school classes from the 3rd grade onwards.
Workshops
With the handover of the project management to the BUND, the environmental educational offer in the Mosellum was expanded and redesigned. An integral part of this concept is the microplastics workshop, which is aimed primarily at school classes in the 5th and 6th grade. The workshop consists of a theoretical and a practical part, in which the participants are informed about the human-made problematic of plastic and the consequences thereof. By making toothpaste, deodorant and four other products, participants can learn how to help avoid plastic.
The second workshop deals with the water quality , the organisms and the water structure of the Moselle. Before the practical part of the "Aquatic Ecological Workshop" begins, it is explained what the water quality is, how it is assessed and what the assessment means for people. In the practical part of the workshop, the so-called macrozoobenthos will be used, examined and identified. With the help of an identification key and a magnifying glass, the participants can take a closer look at the residents of the Moselle and find out what they say about the state of the Moselle.
