Jean-Louis Ricci ( February 22, 1944 - February 27, 2001 ) was a French racing driver .

Career in motorsport

The wealthy Jean-Louis Ricci competed in touring and sports car races from 1987 until he was seriously ill in 2000 . Due to his financial independence he could often choose teams and cockpits; It was not uncommon for him to provide support to those responsible for the team. Ricci wasn't a classic pay driver; In addition to his professional attitude, experts also noticed a talent for racing. His first major race was the 1987 Le Mans 24-hour race , where he shared the cockpit of a Royale RP40 with the Italian Olindo Iacobelli and the French George Tessier . The British Group C2 racing car, which had a 3.3 liter DFL V8 engine from Cosworth , broke down after just 13 laps due to an engine failure.

Ricci competed twelve times in the Le Mans 24-hour race , including for Joest Racing and Yves Courage's team . Partners were drivers like Henri Pescarolo , Claude Ballot-Léna and Jean-Claude Andruet , with whom he was also friendly. He achieved his best results at Le Mans in 1989 and 1992 when he finished sixth in the overall standings.

He drove his last race in 2000 (with his son Romano in the team) at Le Mans and then fell seriously ill. Five days after his 57th birthday, he died in February 2001 of complications from cancer .
