history

The Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz, seat of the four exhibition halls of the National Museum, in August 2011

The Landesmuseum Koblenz was founded in 1956 as a state collection for prehistory and folklore, which is looked after by Josef Röder. Since 1949, Röder was the state shop steward for archaeological monuments and museum maintenance in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate and in this function collected objects from regional industrial and craft culture. At the same time he was honorary director of the Middle Rhine Museum of the city of Koblenz, whose collections were relocated to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. In 1956, the State of Rhineland-Palatinate founded the State Service for Prehistory and Early History in the country bastion of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which Röder took over. At the same time, the State Collection for Prehistory and Folklore was established as a subdivision. Their museum-like exhibition should be an attraction for tourists. First the technical history of viticulture was shown . Mainly machines and tools that were used in viticulture and mining, in river fishing and in basalt and pumice extraction were collected. At the beginning of 1967 the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture separated the preservation of historical monuments and the collection and Röder became head of the “State Collection for Prehistory and Folklore of the Middle Rhine in the State Office for Prehistory and Early History”. At the beginning of 1972, the collection was raised to the status of a state museum and was given the name "State Museum Koblenz - State Collection of Technical Antiquities".

In 1975 Ulrich Löber took over the management of the museum and began redesigning the exhibition. He focused on technology as a human cultural achievement. To make this clear, the museum changed its name to "Landesmuseum Koblenz - State Collection of Technical Cultural Monuments". Under Löber, a museum educator was employed for the first time in Rhineland-Palatinate at the Landesmuseum Koblenz . In 1993, the establishment of a state collection on the history of photography in Rhineland-Palatinate began, which is now presented in the "House of Photography" with permanent and temporary exhibitions. In 2001 Thomas Metz took over the management of the museum, which he held until 2008. He then took up the position of General Director of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE). In August 2003, the "House of Archeology" was opened, in which the State Museum shows important findings from the State of Archeology.

After the 50th anniversary, a fundamental renovation of the premises of the State Museum began in 2007, which is still ongoing. Since the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was part of the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show , the State Museum was also involved in the event with special exhibitions. On the roofs of the Contregarde on the right, the Archaeological Time Gardens were created. In addition, the State Museum accompanied the garden show with two large temporary exhibitions on the Prussian horticulturist Peter Joseph Lenné and on the history of grave culture on the Rhine and Moselle.
