Rolf Wirtgen

Rolf Wirtgen (born December 22, 1954 in Neuwied ) is a German military historian . From 2002 to 2012 he was chairman of the German Society for Heereskunde and has been head of the Defense Technology Study Collection in Koblenz since 1995 .

Life

Wirtgen was born as the son of the military historian Arnold Wirtgen , the founder of the Defense Technology Study Collection Koblenz (WTS). He attended the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Neuwied and, after graduating from high school in 1975 , studied history , art history and sociology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. During his studies he was an intern at the Military History Museum in Vienna, the Royal Danish Armory Museum in Copenhagen and the Military History Museum in Rastatt . From 1983 to 1984 he did basic military service in the Bundeswehr. In 1986, he was at Werner Hahlweg at Münster University with a thesis on military affairs and automatic weapon to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1985 to 1988 he was editor and head of department at the Deutsches Waffen-Journal . In 1988 he entered the higher service at the Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB), today he is government director . He became an employee and from 1995 head of the WTS. In addition, he published several papers on scientific weapons science for the Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement and is the author of articles in the Zeitschrift für Heereskunde .

He acted as scientific secretary to the advisory board of the Werner Hahlweg Prize for Military History and Defense Sciences and, as a successor to his father, was Chairman of the German Society for Heereskunde from 2002 to 2012.
