The 2-cm-Flak-Vierling 38 was an anti -aircraft gun (Flak) of the Wehrmacht in World War II .

history

In 1938, the 2 cm Flak 38 was designed for use on ships of the Kriegsmarine , and the gun was later adopted by the entire Wehrmacht. The Flak-Vierling 38 was widely used as a defense weapon against low -flying aircraft and was often a component of flak towers , armored trains and other fortified air defense positions. In an emergency, the weapon could also be used in ground combat, for which a protective shield was also installed. Almost all ships of the Kriegsmarine (including submarines) were gradually retrofitted with the quadruplets. The Flak-Vierling 38 was produced in the Ostmarkwerk Vienna , in the Chemnitz plant of Auto Union and at Benteler in Bielefeld . The price was 20,000  RM .

The carriage had a triangular bedding with height-adjustable feet. The gunner adjusted the weapon with two hand wheels; The gun was fired by means of two pedals, one for two diametrically opposed barrels. When erected, the flak had a height of 3.07 m. The elevation field ranged from −10 ° to + 100 °. The waitress consisted of seven men. Various sighting devices were available to her, these were: the flak sight 40, the ruler sight 21, the hover circle sight 30/38 and the 3 × 8 telescopic sight for ground combat operations.

Together, the four runs were theoretically able to fire 1800 rounds per minute. In use, a number of 800 rounds / min was realistic. The cannons could be fired automatically or semi-automatically, all four or two diametrically at the same time . The maximum firing range was 4800 m, the maximum firing height was 3800 m, the cutting limit was 2200 m.

The Flak-Vierling 38 was normally on the single-axle special trailer 52 (Sd.Ah. 52) of half-track vehicles like the Maultier , the Sd.Kfz. 251 or the Sd.Kfz. 11 drawn. In order to get fully mobile anti- aircraft vehicles, the gun was also used on the half-track Sd.Kfz. 7 and mounted as a " whirlwind " on the chassis of the Panzer IV .

As a further development, the 2-cm-Flak-Vierling 38/43 was developed in 1943 , which was particularly waterproof and was to be used on submarines. It did not go into series production because the need to evade surface combat due to the changed submarine tactics no longer existed. In April 1945, which was 2cm Flak Vierling 38 / 43F with a fire control radar of Telefunken tested between the four tubes.
