Theodor Kirchner
Theodor Fürchtegott Kirchner (born December 10, 1823 in Neukirchen / Erzgeb. , † September 18, 1903 in Hamburg ) was a German composer , conductor , organist and pianist .
Life
Kirchner received piano and organ lessons at an early age. From 1838 he continued his musical training in Leipzig , where he made the acquaintance of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .
After completing his studies, Kirchner entered the newly founded Leipzig Conservatory in 1843 as the first student . In the same year, on Mendelssohn's recommendation, he went to Winterthur , Switzerland, where he took up the position of organist at the local church . At the same time he gave concerts and worked as a music teacher. From 1862 he worked as a conductor in Zurich , where he led the subscription concerts of the Allgemeine Musik-Gesellschaft (AMG). Here he made the acquaintance of Johannes Brahms , with whom he was to become a lifelong friend, as well as Friedrich Hegar . In 1868 he married the singer Maria Schmidt in Zurich. From this marriage three children were born: Emmy (1870-1942), Blanka (* 1871, died three months after birth of cholera) and Theodor (1872-1927). In 1872 he left Switzerland and went back to Germany. Stations of his work are from 1872 Meiningen, where he worked as a music teacher, and one year later Würzburg ; here he held the position of director of the local music school. From 1876 he worked for a few years as a music teacher in Leipzig and in 1883 switched to the Dresden Conservatory. Georg Pittrich was one of his students there . In 1890 Kirchner went to Hamburg, where he became almost blind and died paralyzed from several strokes in 1903.
His financial circumstances were very bad all his life. In 1884 a fundraising campaign was initiated for him, in which Edvard Grieg , Hans von Bülow and Carl Reinecke , among others , took part. The proceeds were invested and the interest was made available to Kirchner for his livelihood. However, as in previous years, his friend Johannes Brahms continued to support him financially.
Theodor Kirchner was buried in the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof in Hamburg, grid square Z 8 (south of Chapel 8).
Act
Theodor Kirchner was a very productive composer. His work is very diverse and complex. As a composer, he eschewed large forms and gave his best in expressive character pieces. The piano works alone comprise over 1,000 compositions. He also arranged a large number of the works of Schumann and Brahms for the piano. He also wrote arrangements for pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven , Edvard Grieg, Joseph Haydn , Franz Schubert and many others. He is considered the main representative of the romantic piano miniatures .
