The 15 cm infantry gun 33 ( sIG 33 for short ) was the standard heavy infantry gun of the German Wehrmacht in World War II .

Development and production

Development of the sIG 33 began in 1926 at Rheinmetall in Düsseldorf . In 1933 it was introduced to the army as a heavy infantry gun and remained in service until the end of the war. It was produced by AEG in Hennigsdorf and the Bohemian Arms Factory in Strakonice .

construction

The sIG 33 had a large box spar carriage with return and retrieval system in the cradle below the tube. The trunnion was located far back in order to allow the pipe to be raised as much as possible. Furthermore, two spring equalizers were attached to the sides of the mount to compensate for the heaviness of the muzzle. The split protective shield on the left and right of the pipe was typical. The wide cast steel wheels had solid rubber tires.

ammunition

For the sIG 33 there were 38 kg HE shells, 24.6 kg HL grenades and smoke grenades. The life of a tube was approximately 10,000 to 15,000 rounds.

commitment

The sIG 33 was used in the heavy infantry gun trains of the infantry gun companies in the infantry regiments and rifle regiments (motorized). Two sIG 33 units each formed the infantry gun platoon. From 1941 the sIG 33 on self-propelled guns was also used as Sturmpanzer I , Sturmpanzer II , StuIG 33 B , Sturmpanzer 38 (t) and Sturmpanzer IV .
