The 7.5 cm KwK 42 was a Kampfwagenkanone ( KwK for short ) , which was installed with the caliber length L / 70 as the main armament / turret cannon in the medium battle tank Panzer V , but also in the Panzer IV / 70 under the designation 7.5 -cm-PaK 42 L / 70 (earlier 7.5 cm Stu.K. 42 L / 70) identically constructed as a tank hunting cannon from 1942 onwards in World War II .
History and commitment
If the combat vehicle cannon of a battle tank or other armored combat vehicle was installed in a tank destroyer , the type designation anti-tank cannon was used for the special purpose . In the case of the 7.5 cm KwK 42 , the name of the otherwise structurally identical weapon system was changed to 7.5 cm PaK 42 .
The cannon had an electrically operated fire mechanism. Instead of a mechanically triggered firing pin, there was an electric ignition mechanism. The cannon bolt worked semi-automatically, with the empty cartridge automatically ejected after the grenade had been fired and the barrel returned completely, but the bolt itself remained open - and thus ready for the next shell. After inserting or reloading the next shell, the bolt locked automatically and the cannon was ready to fire again.

Types of ammunition
Instead of the previously used 75 mm tank shells, only three shell types with the 75 × 640 mm rim cartridge were used for this cannon.
- PzGr. 39/42 - Tank shell 1939 / for 7.5 cm KwK 42 L / 70, with tank shell armor-piercing, with cap and ballistic hood - projectile highly explosive
- PzGr. 40 /42 (Hk) - tank grenade cartridge 1940 / for 7.5 cm KwK 42 L / 70, with tank shell (kinetic energy projectile, hard-core ammunition or hard-core projectile (with tungsten core))
- SprGr. 42 - Grenade cartridge with HE grenade for 7.5 cm KwK 42 L / 70
