The 17 cm cannon (E) was a German railway gun used by the Wehrmacht during World War II .
history
The cannon was the barrel of the 17 cm SK L / 40 from the outdated ships of the line of the Braunschweig and Germany class in a six-axle railway carriage , dating from before the First World War . It was an interim solution in order to have K 5 and K12 railway guns available until the introduction of the new, modern designs .
The cannon could be rotated 360 ° on the railway carriage and could also fire from the side with the help of side supports. The lifespan of a barrel that fired 62.8 kilogram projectiles was approximately 1100 rounds.
Six cannons were built and used in railroad batteries 717 and 718.
