Tärnaby ( South Sami Dearna ) is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Lapland .
The place in the municipality of Storuman is located 125 kilometers northwest of Storuman on the upper reaches of the Ume älv river , about 70 kilometers from the Norwegian border.
Tärnaby is one of the largest winter sports resorts in Sweden. The Swedish ski racers Ingemar Stenmark , Stig Strand , Jens Byggmark and Anja Pärson grew up in Tärnaby . A local ski museum is dedicated to them. There is also a semen museum with collections from Tärna and Sorsele from the 18th and 19th centuries in Tärnaby.
