The river Ume älv , officially Umeälven, has its source in Lake Överuman on the Swedish-Norwegian border and flows in a southeastern direction through the municipalities of Storuman , Lycksele , Vindeln , Vännäs and Umeå in the province of Västerbottens län .
The river passes the mountains around the Norra Storfjället ( 1792 m above sea level ) to the west and flows through the large lake Storuman and other lakes. In the lower reaches of the north, the almost equally long Vindelälven flows into the river. The Ume älv is mostly developed. It has a relatively large discharge of 435 m³ / s and there are 17 hydropower plants in it with a total electricity production of ten terawatt hours . After a 470 km run it flows into the Kvarken region , the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia . The Umeälv Delta is on the list of the Ramsar Convention .
