The Vindelälven is a left tributary of the Ume älv in northern Sweden . It rises not far from the Norwegian border and flows in a south-easterly direction to the Baltic Sea , where it flows into the Ume älv after about 445 kilometers west of the city of Umeå , only 25 kilometers from the coast. In the upper reaches it flows through the lake Storvindeln .
Along with the Torneälv , Kalixälv and Piteälv, the Vindelälven is one of the four major rivers in northern Sweden, which were declared national rivers ( Swedish Nationalälv ) by a resolution of the Reichstag and may not be regulated or expanded for the use of hydropower. It causes extensive flooding in spring when it swells up to ten times its mean water flow.
The Vindelälven drains an area of 12,650 km² and has an average water flow of 190 m³ / s. Ammarnäs , Sorsele , Blattnicksele , Rusksele , Åmsele , Hällnäs , Vindeln and Vännäsby are located on the Vindelälven . The river has its origin in the area of the municipality of Arjeplog in the province of Norrbottens län , but after a few kilometers it reaches Västerbotten län , where it flows through the territory of the municipalities of Sorsele , Lycksele , Vindeln , Umeå and Vännäs . The Laisälven is the largest tributary of the Vindelälven. The Swedish county road 363 extends largely along the river of Vindelälven.
