Ammarnäs is a small town ( småort ) in the Swedish municipality of Sorsele in the province of Västerbottens län in the historical province (landskap) Lapland .
The Vindelälven flows through Ammarnäs , and Länsväg 363, which mostly follows the left bank of the river from Umeå and is Sweden's longest provincial road with 325 km, ends there. A little outside the Kungsleden hiking trail passes the village. In winter, the 400-kilometer-long Vindelälvsdraget sled dog competition begins in Ammarnäs and ends in Vännäsby , where the Vindelälven and the Umeälven meet.
One of the sights of Ammarnäs is the Potatisbacken (German 'potato hill '). A cold-resistant variety of potato is grown on the south side of the hill - just below the Arctic Circle.
