geography

The municipality, which is located in the center of Lapland, stretches from the Norwegian border along the Piteälven and Laisälven rivers and the Hornavan - Uddjaure - Storavan lake system , which is drained by the Skellefte älv , around 70 kilometers southeast into the Skanden Foreland. About a third of the municipality is located in the high mountains with peaks between 1200 and 1800 meters.

Arjeplog has a share in the Padjelanta and Sarek national parks ; there are 13 more nature reserves on its territory. Only a small part of the municipality in the southeast is agriculturally usable.

economy

Reindeer herding and forestry are traditional industries in the community. Also important is tourism, which has increased sharply after the construction of Reichsstrasse 95 and the development of the mountains for traffic. Arjeplog has also become a center for winter testing of cars and related equipment. This industry employs just as many people as tourism.

silver

The first silver discoveries were made in the municipality around 1620, and mining developed between 1635 and 1659. The annual silver yield is estimated at 36 kilograms. In 1659 the mining site was destroyed by the Danes and Norwegians. Mining was not resumed until 1719 and stopped in 1810 due to lack of profitability.
