Coordinates: 66 ° 23 '  N , 23 ° 39'  O Övertorneå is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County , in the historic province of Norrbotten .

geography

Övertorneå municipality stretches about 90 kilometers along the Torne älv river , which forms the border with Finland . The river valley, which is partially flooded in spring, is used for agriculture. The heights west of the Torne älv are covered with coniferous forests. The Finnish municipality east of the river is of the same name: Ylitornio / Övertorneå. The municipality includes the following places ( tatorter ): Hedenäset , Juoksengi , Övertorneå and Svanstein .

Övertorneå was the terminus of the almost 47 kilometer long Karungi – Övertorneå railway . The line, opened in 1914, was shut down and dismantled in 1986. Today there is a rail connection on the Finnish side at Ylitornio station on the Tornio – Kolari railway line .

economy

The traditional industry of the municipality is agriculture in the Torne älv valley and forestry, which forms the basis for the numerous sawmills.

Attractions

About 15 kilometers south of Övertorneå is Hedenäset, an old church square with an octagonal church from 1740 . The Torne älv forms a delta landscape there, as the river used to flow into the Gulf of Bothnia there .
