The Tornio – Kolari railway is a railway line in Finland . It has the Russian track width of 1524 mm, a length of 182.6 km and is not electrified. The Finnish state owns the route. The route is operated by the state-owned railway company VR-Yhtymä .

history

The route was built in stages between 1921 and 1973.

The route sections were completed as follows:

  • March 24, 1922 : Tornio - Kukkola
  • 01/01/1923: Kukkola– Karunki
  • 01/01/1926: Karunki – Korpikylä
  • 11/01/1927: Korpikylä– Aavasaksa
  • 09/01/1928: Aavasaksa – Kaulinranta
  • January 3, 1964: Kaulinranta - Pello
  • December 1st, 1965: Pello – Sieppijärvi
  • December 1st, 1966: Sieppijärvi– Kolari
  • September 1st, 1967: Kolari – Niesa– Äkäsjoki
  • 04/01/1973: Niesa – Rautuvaara

Operation today

In 2013, night trains ran to and from Helsinki only three times a week. The trains ran on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings on the route and stopped in Ylitornio and Pello on the way. On the same day we went back to Helsinki. These trains do not serve the Tornio station, but have their own Tornio Itäinen stop in the city . There is also freight traffic on the whole route.

In 2016, the express trains to Helsinki are equipped with car transporters, sleeping cars and an on-board restaurant. In the winter season there are at times one or two trains (one daily to Pasila / Böle) at different times . The return trains also run as night trains.

The maximum speed for passenger and freight trains is 80 km / h. In 2008 there were 211 level crossings on the route, 17 of which were secured with barriers and 194 without barriers. In 2016 there were 134 level crossings, 22 secured with barriers and 112 unsecured. In 2008, 1.1 million tons of goods were transported over the route, in 2016 it was 0.8 million tons.

Planning

Due to mining expansions in Pajala on the Swedish side, the Kolari route was to be continued from either Kolari or Äkäsjoki west of the Muonionjoki River. The rail freight traffic required for mining should start in 2012. The transport would then have been directed from Sweden to Tapi and Sahavaara to the port of Kemi, where the ore would have been loaded onto ships. This would have required considerable investments, the renovation of the existing tracks and bridges and the construction of new sections of the route. The project was not carried out.
