The Aavasaksa (Swedish Aavasaksa ; historically also Avasaxa ) is a 242 m high mountain in northern Finland. It is located in the municipality of Ylitornio in the province of Lapland , a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle and is surrounded by the Tengeliönjoki river, which flows into the Tornionjoki on the western slope of the mountain , which forms the state border between Finland and Sweden .
From the summit of Aavasaksa you can have a wide view of the flat surrounding area, also here is the southernmost point of Finland, from which the midnight sun can be observed in summer . In the 18th century it was the target of a scientific expedition by the French Maupertuis , in the 19th century it was established as one of the surveying points of the Struve Arch . As one of 34 selected points of this survey network, the Aavasaksa was added to the list of world cultural and natural heritage in 2005. In addition, since 1994 it has been one of the 27 official national landscapes of Finland .
Aavasaksa train station
There is a train station of the same name on the Tornio – Kolari railway line . This was put into operation on December 1, 1931. Passenger traffic was discontinued on May 1, 1995, and freight traffic ended on January 1, 2001. Since then, the station has only been used as a crossing station.
The station had a two-tier engine shed and a water tower .
