Coordinates: 67 ° 8 ' N , 20 ° 40' E Gällivare [ ˈjɛlivɑːrə ] is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland , about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle .
The main town of the municipality is Gällivare . The community is about as big as the state of Thuringia . The municipality includes the localities ( tatorter ) : Gällivare, Hakkas , Koskullskulle , Malmberget , Nilivaara , Tjautjas and Ullatti . A notable småort is Nattavaara .
economy
There are numerous tourist destinations in the municipality, including Dundret , Kaitum , Nikkaluokta , Ritsem and Stora Sjöfallet . The Inlandsbahn also attracts numerous visitors. The ore railway runs through the community .
In addition to tourism, the most important employers are the Malmberget mines of LKAB ( iron ore ) and Aitik of Boliden AB ( copper , gold and silver ).
