LKAB , an abbreviation for Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag , is a Swedish mining company based in Luleå, which mainly mines iron ore in Kiruna and is 100% owned by the Swedish state.

history

Two years before LKAB was founded, the first ore train drove from Malmberget in Gällivare to Luleå to the newly built ore port of Svartön. In 1899 the line from Gällivare to Kiruna was opened and in 1902 the entire line to Narvik , Norway , which enabled LKAB to sell iron ore all year round from the ice-free port in Narvik worldwide.

In 1898 Hjalmar Lundbohm became general director of LKAB. The geologist is considered to be the founder of the city of Kiruna and a key person in the positive development of the company and the region until his retirement in 1920. In 1903 the company Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg-Oxelösund (TGO) took over AB Gellivare Malmfalt (AGM) together with its subsidiary LKAB. Four years later, the state got into the company by buying all of LKAB's preferred shares . In 1954 the company built Europe's first pellet factory in Malmberget . Three years later, in 1957, the state took over LKAB with 96%, the remaining 4% remained with TGO. The company has been 100% state-owned since 1976.

In 1961 the LKAB opened the Leväniemi opencast mine in the ore field of Svappavaara , which was closed again in 1983 due to sales problems. It was then flooded. After obtaining the environmental permits, the LKAB would like to swamp the opencast mine and put the plant back into operation. In 1968 LKAB opened a pellet factory in Svappavaara.

Subsidiaries

LKAB has seven Swedish subsidiaries:

Mines

The most important and largest mine of LKAB is the Kiruna Mine , it is considered as the world's largest iron ore - mine .

Another iron ore mine is located in Malmberget. It opens up 20 (partial) deposits and is the second largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In 2013, a new main production bed was excavated at a depth of 1,250 meters , thus securing mining at this location for 20 to 30 years.

The third major site is the Gruvberget opencast mine in the Svappavaara ore field. The mining of the Gruvberget opencast mine in 2017 - together with the planned nearby opencast mines Leveäniemi and Mertainen - will account for around 25% of LKAB's total iron ore production.

A total of 1000 kilometers of roads are built in the LKAB mines.
