Nikkaluokta (Sami for Nils Bay ) is a village in northern Sweden . It is predominantly Sámi inhabited and belongs to the province of Norrbotten County and the municipality of Gällivare . Nikkaluokta is located on the uppermost bay of Lake Paittasjärvi. The city of Kiruna is just under 70 km from the bay. The small town is east of the highest mountain range in Sweden, the highest peak of which is the southern tip of the Kebnekaise .

Nikkaluokta is a popular starting point for hikes around the Kebnekaise or for the Kungsleden . Walking distance to the Kebnekaise mountain station is 19 km and can be reached in 4–5 hours. Helicopter transport is also possible (6 min.).

The reindeer herder and namesake Nils Olsson Sarri came with his wife from Norway through the Vistasal in 1910 and founded the place. Sarri then achieved local fame as the first Sami mountain guide. His son Lasse carried out the same profession until he was eight years old, making him Sweden's oldest mountain guide. But it was not until 1971 that a road was built from Kiruna to Nikkaluokta. Even today, the entire place is dominated by the Sarri family.

Today only 22 people live there all year round. The place consists of a few scattered wooden houses. The "center" is the mountain station run by the Sarri family, with a restaurant and an attached grocery store. Around a dozen simple wooden huts for overnight hikers are grouped around it. Some of the huts are very modern and have electricity and sanitary facilities. However, the tourist also has the option of staying overnight in a traditional kote (peat hut).

A bus line from Kiruna ends there. There is also a helipad there.

If you hike from Nikkaluokta to Kebnekaise, you will find Lapland's only Sami burger snack bar in the wilderness after 6 km at Lake Ladtjojaure. A motorboat travels across the lake in the direction of Kebnekaise.
