Aitik is an open-cast copper mine owned by Boliden AB, around 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Gällivare in northern Sweden . It is one of the largest European copper mines . Gold , silver and molybdenum are extracted from the ore as by-products . The open pit is 3 km long and 1.1 km wide.

The ore mining began in 1968 with a production of two million tons. Since then, mining has gradually increased to 18 million tons annually . In 2010 Aitik was expanded and the production reached 39 million tons of ore in 2014.
