Coordinates: 66 ° 36 ′  N , 19 ° 50 ′  E Jokkmokk is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland .

The main town of the municipality is Jokkmokk (in Lulesami Jåhkåmåhkke or Dálvvadis , North Sami Johkamohkk ). Other localities include Puottaure , Kvikkjokk , Kåbdalis , Murjek , Porjus and Vuollerim . Jokkmokk is known for the winter market , which has been held every February since 1605. The world's longest cross-country skiing, the Nordenskiöldslopp, has also been taking place in Jokkmokk since 2016 .

Jokkmokk belongs to the heartland of the Sami , the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia . According to estimates by the Sami Council of Sweden, the municipality has the largest proportion of members of this ethnic group in Sweden, with a population of around 20% . With an area of ​​19,334 km², the municipality is only slightly smaller than Saxony and the second largest municipality in Sweden. It extends from the Norwegian border about 200 kilometers along the two rivers Lilla Luleälven and Stora Luleälven, which merge at Vuollerim to form Lule älv , to the southeast.

In the Scandinavian Mountains , which take up a little more than a third of the municipality's area, there are the national parks Stora Sjöfallet , Padjelanta and Sarek , where bears and golden eagles can be observed. In the Skanden foothills about 20 kilometers northeast of Jokkmokk is the Muddus National Park with extensive wetlands and coniferous jungle .

The European route 45 , the so-called Inlandsväg , runs through the municipality from Gothenburg to Karesuando .

economy

Important sectors in Jokkmokk are the public sector including health services, care and schooling, construction, forestry and agriculture (including reindeer herding ). Tourism is also of growing importance, including the winter market and the Nordenskiöldslauf. The most important employers in the municipality in 2019 were the municipality of Jokkmokk with 525 employees and Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB with 125 employees. There are 11 hydropower plants in the municipality, which with an annual production of 11–12 TWh provide about 1/6 of the electricity produced from hydropower in Sweden.

Apart from the main town Jokkmokk, Kvikkjokk is a well-visited place, from which several hiking trails lead into the national parks . Sweden's largest hydroelectric power station, Harsprånget, is located at Stora Luleälven, 10 kilometers south of Porjus. It has a drop of 107 meters and can be viewed daily in summer. A 6,000 year old Stone Age settlement was discovered near Vuollerim in 1983 .
