Jokkmokk ( Lule : Jåhkåmåhkke , Northern Sami : Dálvvadis ) is a place ( tätort ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland at the northern Arctic Circle . The place is the center of the Sami culture in Sweden, which includes several schools and training centers.

Jokkmokk is the capital of the municipality of the same name and is known for its annual Jokkmokks Vintermarknad (Jokkmokks Winter Market ) , where Sami from all over Lapland have been offering their goods since 1605 .

history

The first development dates back to 1602. That year, King Charles IX decided. the creation of some marketplaces in northern Sweden in order to be able to more easily reach the scattered Sami indigenous population for trade, tax collection and proselytizing. Jokkmokks Vintermarknad was first held in 1605. Since then, the market has been held on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday in February every year.

Attractions

In addition to two churches , Jokkmokk is home to the Ájtte Svensk Fjäll- och Samemuseum (Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum), in which the history and life of the Sami are documented. The museum has been expanded continuously over the years. You can also buy books, maps and CDs there. The Fjällbotanischer Garten is attached to the Ájtte. Here the vegetation zones of the fells have been "recreated" very vividly in a small river bed. Right next to it is a stone grinding shop, in which jewelry and everyday objects are made only from local types of stone. The old Sami tradition of pewter processing is maintained in the “Jokkmokks Tenn” pewter factory .

The photographer and author Edvin Nilsson, who lives in Jokkmokk, shows some pictures of the Sarek National Park in a small exhibition.

traffic

Jokkmokk is located on the European route 45 , the Inlandsvägen from Gothenburg to Karesuando . The place also has several bus connections and an inland railway station .

tourism

Extensive hikes of all levels of difficulty can u. a. in the Serri nature reserve, in the Kronogård state forest area or in the Muddus National Park . The extreme northwest of the municipality of Jokkmokk leads into the mountainous region on the Norwegian border. Starting from Kvikkjokk (18 inhabitants), hikers can explore the birch forest region, the fells and the high mountains with their glaciers. The small town is one of the main entrances to the Laponia World Heritage Site .

Accommodation is offered by hotels, youth hostels, holiday villages, huts, campsites and mountain stations. During the winter market, all accommodations in Jokkmokk and the surrounding area are booked out months in advance. There are no mountain huts in the areas that have not been developed for tourism (e.g. in the Sarek National Park), so you have to carry your tent, sleeping bag, provisions and all other equipment yourself.

Climate change

In 2018, some Sami families, together with people from other countries, sued the European Union for the inadequate implementation of EU climate targets. The Sami culture and the reindeer herding, which is important to them, are directly threatened, according to the Sami climate activist Sanna Vannar . On May 20, 2019, the European Court rejected the claim on the grounds that the plaintiffs lacked the necessary individual concern. In February 2020 there was a Fridays for Future demonstration with Greta Thunberg .
