Inga Juuso (born October 5, 1945 in Jokkmokk , Sweden ; † August 23, 2014 ) was a Sami - Norwegian joiker and actress .

Life

origin

Juuso was born in Jokkmokk in Sweden after her parents had to flee from Finnmark , which was occupied during the war . After the end of the war they returned to Norway and Juuso grew up in Alta . During this time, Sami life was strongly influenced by Norwegianization. Juuso later fought against the displacement of Sami and campaigned for the Sami languages and the Sami culture. She learned the traditional Sami singing technique of joiking as a child.

As a trained journalist, Juuso worked, among others, at NRK Sápmi, the Sami service offered by the Norwegian broadcaster Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK). She also worked as a joik teacher.

In 1991 she released her debut album Ravddas Ravdii . In the course of her career, she combined her joik singing with various styles of music, such as jazz and world music . From 1999 she worked as a cultural mediator and Fylkesjoikerin for the then province of Troms . In 2003 she founded the band Inga Juuso Group , which released the album Váimmu ivnnit / Pattern of the heart in 2008 . In the same year Juuso formed the Skáidi duo with the jazz bassist Steinar Raknes . The duo, who had worked together before, also released the record Where the rivers meet in 2008 .

In 2012 she was the first Sami musician to win the category “Folk Musician of the Year” at the Folkelarm Folk Music Prize . The year before, she won the Norwegian Music Prize Spellemannprisen in the "open class" category.

She is considered one of the most important Sami solo artists of her time and served as a model for Mari Boine , among others .

In addition to her musical activities, Inga Juuso also worked as an actress. In 1989 she began to play at the Sámi theater Beaivváš Sàmi Teáhter in Kautokeino . She also worked at the Sami theater in Kiruna and other theaters in Stockholm and Jukkasjärvi . In 2005 she starred in the film The Rebellion of Kautokeino by Nils Gaup .

Juuso died on August 23, 2014 after a long illness.
