Övertorneå ( Finnish Matarenki ) is a place ( tätort ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten . It is located about 70 km northwest of Haparanda on the Torne älv river near the Finnish border and is the capital of the municipality of the same name . Övertorneå is a trading and service center for the middle Tornetal.
Culture and sights
The wooden church from the 17th and 18th centuries contains the oldest surviving organ in Sweden. In Övertorneå is the Nordkalotten library with a collection of older and more recent literature on the region. A small open-air museum is north of the 17th century church.
