The Piteälven (also Piteälv , Pite älv or Piteå älv ) is a north Swedish river that flows from the Scandinavian Mountains into the Baltic Sea .
The Piteälven has a length of 400 kilometers and drains an area of 11,220 km². It rises on the Norwegian-Swedish border and flows into the Gulf of Bothnia at Piteå . The mean water flow at the mouth is 160 m³ / s. There are several large lakes on its upper reaches, such as B. Tjeggelvas , Vuolvojaure and Labbas , and rapids such as. B. the Trollforsen and the 2 kilometer long Storforsen near Vidsel . The Piteälven is one of the few rivers in northern Sweden that is not equipped with hydroelectric power stations.
