history

Lycksele is one of the oldest places in Lapland and was the center of southern Lapland from the 17th century. Lycksele became a market in 1929 and received city rights in 1946. With around 2900 inhabitants, the city was one of the smallest cities in Sweden at the time, but it has undergone dynamic development as a trade and service center for southern Lapland.

Attractions

Lycksele is an important winter sports center, but also a gliding center. The northernmost zoo in Europe is located in Lycksele. Mainly native northern Swedish animals can be seen here. The musk oxen and the aquarium with flowing water are a special attraction. In Lycksele there is a market every year at the beginning of March, a tradition that can be traced back to the 17th century. It used to be a meeting point for Sami and merchants, today it is a folk festival that attracts thousands of visitors from near and far, with the Sami in their traditional costumes being another attraction.

Gammplatsen is now an open-air museum, but used to be the old meeting place and market place for the Sami people. In addition to the open-air museum, there is also the forest museum (Skogsmuseum).
