Approximate location of the two “Grodenbatterie” infantry factories in Wilhelmshaven

The Grodenbatterie was a defensive work later part of the fortress plan of Wilhelmshaven .

location

The Groden battery was located in the Neuengroden district of Wilhelmshaven , directly behind the sea dike. It consisted of two infantry units. Which were only 150 meters apart.

history

The Grodenbatterie was built shortly before the turn of the century. The construction period lasted from 1893 to 1896. During the Second World War , the facility was greatly expanded and bunkered. However, no heavy flak was stationed here, as in many other fortress structures in Wilhelmshaven. After the war the Grodenbatterie was blown up by the occupying forces. Despite the destruction of the facility, some remains can still be seen. Today's "Triftweg" was formerly called "Grodenbatterie".

Armament

Each of the two infantry works was armed with four type 28 HL / 12 guns. There were hollow trusses between the guns . Four of the guns of one of the two batteries were installed in 1915 in the port of Blankenberge in Flanders as "Battery Groden". In 1917, the two batteries were each equipped with four 28 cm guns in a central pivot mount.
