Else Holmelund Minarik

Else Holmelund Minarik (born September 13, 1920 in Fredericia , Denmark , † July 12, 2012 in Sunset Beach, North Carolina ) was a Danish - American children's book author . Your children's book series Little Bear (engl. Little Bear ) was widely circulated and became as animated - television series filmed.

biography

Else Holmelund Minarik was born in Denmark and immigrated to the USA with her parents at the age of four. In 1940 she married Walter Minarik († 1963). After studying psychology and art at Queens College, City University of New York , she worked as a journalist for the Daily Sentinel newspaper in Rome during World War II . She then moved to Long Island , where she taught as a teacher for elementary school students in the Commack School District. She wrote her first book The Little Bear for her daughter Brooke and then used it in class with her students. Minarik later lived in Nottingham ( New Hampshire ) and was married to Pulitzer Prize-winning Homer Bigart in 1970, his second marriage . After his death in 1991, she settled in Sunset Beach North Carolina , where she continued to work as a writer for a long time and died of an old age of complications from a heart attack .
