Forts Schillig
The small coastal town of Schillig and the forts Schillig were the location of three forts with heavy batteries, which were part of the Wilhelmshaven fortress plan and which served to protect the Prussian war port. The coastal forts are only partially preserved.
history
Schillig was the location of three of the four heavy batteries that the Imperial Navy set up to defend the coast. There was a dike battery and a meadow battery , as well as a watt battery , located further inland towards Minsen . The fourth battery was the Sielbatterie , it was at Horumersiel . The artillery positions of the three forts were supposed to protect the entrance to the jade .
The guns of the battery were set up individually and were in casemates. There were also barracks buildings, but they were only barrack-like. After the First World War , the guns had to be removed and the facility demilitarized. The casemates were partially dismantled. In 1924 the Reichsmarine set up a flak cartillery school in Schillig. From 1935 the facilities were restored as part of the German rearmament . At this point, the watt battery and the and the sewer battery were also added. During the Second World War, heavy anti-aircraft guns were located here on the site of the former Watt battery . Some of the guns came into use during World War II when they were aimed inland to combat land targets. The facilities were never the target of Allied attacks themselves, but were blown up after the war.
Dike battery
The dike battery ( location ) had dimensions of 100 × 500 meters and was equipped with bunkers and a moat. The name refers to the geographical location directly on the dike. Apartment houses were built on the site of the dike battery in the late 2010s. However, ruins of the former military facilities remained.
Meadow battery
Like the dike battery, the meadow battery ( location ) had dimensions of 100 × 500 meters and was also equipped with bunkers and a moat. Its name also refers to its geographical location. Today the plant is wooded. A wide moat still surrounds the complex. Even though it was blown up, there is still concrete remains. On August 7, 1982, it was declared a nature reserve Wiesenbatterie Schillig , since numerous species have settled here and there are no paths, the facility is not open to the public.
Watt battery
The watt battery ( location ) was directly on the beach in front of Schillig outside the sea dike. The facility was located on a dike-like elevation; today there is a campsite and a restaurant there. Only a few remains of her have survived today. During the Second World War, the Flakbatterie Schillig was built on the Wattbatterie .
