Gust Graas

Gustave "Gust" Graas (born December 19, 1924 in Esch an der Alzette ; † February 19, 2020 ) was a Luxembourg businessman and painter. As a manager , he played a key role in the creation of the television channel RTL . As an artist, he was a representative of lyrical abstraction .

life and work

After the war, Graas studied law in Leuven, Belgium, and in Paris . He initially worked as a lawyer in Luxembourg City . In 1952 he went to CLT as legal advisor , which later became the RTL Group . In 1957 he became general director and member of the board of directors. In 1983 he founded RTL Television , one of the first private television stations in Germany. Graas was also a co-founder of the Luxembourg airline Luxair , whose board of directors he chaired for over 20 years.

In addition to his professional career, Graas developed as a painter and sculptor. During his studies in Paris he got to know some impressionists with whom he stayed in contact later. His work is a lyrical abstraction . In 1970 he was awarded the Prix ​​Grand-Duc Adolphe .

In 1989 Graas retired. He moved to Pollença in Mallorca , where he continued to paint. His exhibition Mis años en España (1989–2003) showed the influence of the sun and the colors of Mallorca on his work. Graas died on February 19, 2020 at the age of 95.
