Mövlud Mustafa oğlu Mirəliyev (born February 27, 1974 in Kitob , Qashqadaryo Province , Uzbek SSR ) is a former Azerbaijani judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 2008.

Career

The 1.83 m tall Mövlud Mirəliyev from the Attila Sports Club in Baku fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 1997 he had already finished second at the World Cup tournament in Moscow. His international breakthrough came at the 2003 World Championships in Osaka. In the light heavyweight division, he reached the quarterfinals and was defeated by the Italian Michele Monti , in the hope round he failed against the Belarusian Ihar Makarau . Three days later he was defeated in the open class in the semifinals against the Estonian Indrek Pertelson . He won the battle for a bronze medal against the Romanian Gabriel Munteanu .

In 2004 he won the World Cup tournament in Tbilisi. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Mirəliyev lost in his opening match against Elco van der Geest from the Netherlands . In the round of hope he defeated the Egyptian Bassel El Gharbawy , the Japanese Kōsei Inoue and the Kazakhs Asqat Schitkejew . In the fight for a bronze medal he was defeated by the German Michael Jurack . Three months after the Olympic Games, Mirəliyev won the military world championships in front of a home crowd in Baku.

In 2006 Mirəliyev won his only national championship title. In 2007 he finished seventh at the European Championships. Three weeks later he won his second World Cup tournament in Rome. At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, he finished seventh in the open class. At the end of his career, he reached the semi-finals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he was defeated by the Mongolian Naidangiin Tüwschinbajar . In the battle for bronze, he defeated the Pole Przemysław Matyjaszek .
