Indrek Pertelson (born April 21, 1971 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is a former Soviet or Estonian judoka . He was European champion and medalist at world championships and the Olympic Games.
Athletic career
Pertelson began judo at the age of seven. He trained with Soviet junior coach Aavo Pohgala, who later became his personal trainer. So Pertelson was able to celebrate successes as a junior. In 1990 and 1991 he was European Junior Champion in the class up to 95 kg. At the Goodwill Games in Saint Petersburg in 1994 , he was able to win the silver medal. In 1996 he won the gold medal in the open weight class at the European Championships in The Hague . Pertelson was able to collect a silver medal and another three bronze medals at European championships. At the 1999 World Championships in Birmingham Pertelson was runner-up. He was able to repeat this result in Bucharest in 2003 . He won bronze medals in the heavyweight division (over 100 kg) at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . Pertelson was able to win four World Cup competitions in his career. He celebrated his first World Cup victory in Paris in 1994 and his last in Minsk in 1999 . Pertelson started several years for the multiple German champions TSV Abensberg in the Judo Bundesliga .
After an active sports career
After Pertelson resigned from competitive sports after the 2004 Olympic Games, he continues to work in judo. He supports his compatriot Aleksei Budõlin , who is also successful, in the preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games. He is also an employee of the sports director of the European judo association Daniel Lascău .
