Gozzio Battaglia

Gozzio Battaglia (* around 1270 in Rimini ; † June 10, 1348 in Avignon ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a wealthy family of landowners and bankers and studied law. In 1310 he found himself professor of law at the University of Coimbra . He belonged to the cathedral chapters in Palencia , Burgos and Ravenna , and was also the papal house chaplain .

From 1335 to 1338 he was the titular Latin Patriarch of Constantinople . Pope Benedict XII. appointed him on December 18, 1338 cardinal priest . Battaglia was the only Italian to be promoted to cardinal during his tenure. His titular church was Santa Prisca . Battaglia took part in the conclave of 1342 that Pope Clement VI. chose.

He died in Avignon in 1348 and was buried in the Church of Sant'Agnese in Rimini.
