The Mariensiel lock is the easternmost lock on the Ems-Jade Canal . It is located in the Bordum district of the independent city of Wilhelmshaven .
description
The lock, although it is located in Wilhelmshaven area, is named after the Sander district of Mariensiel . It is operated by the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation and can be used all year round. The operating times depend on the season and are set anew every year.
The lock basin is 44.0 m long, the usable width is limited to 6.5 m by the lock gates. With an average drop of 0.2 m, the water level between the Ems-Jade Canal and the Wilhelmshaven inland ports is balanced.
For continuous drainage of the hinterland, a flood branches off south of the lock . A new weir was put into operation in 2014.
The lock keeper also operates the bascule bridge in Mariensiel (km 66.3) and the swing bridges Fortification Bridge (km 65.7) and Middelsfähr (km 64.9). For the passage of this section of the canal, the skippers have to adjust their speed so that the lock keeper can overtake the boat by bicycle .
