Emden Airfield (aerial photo 2006)

The Emden airfield is a commercial airfield in the north of the city of Emden ( East Frisia ).

It is approved for aircraft up to 14 tons . GPS / RNAV methods are available for instrument approaches. There is also a special approach procedure for helicopters , which now make up a significant proportion of the traffic volume.

Airlines and Destinations

The OFD Ostfriesischer Flight Service GmbH is flying all the East Frisian Islands in. There are up to seven connections a day to the airport on the island of Borkum alone .

In addition, Emden airfield is of great importance for the business traffic of local companies, especially Volkswagen . The airfield supplies the Emden Volkswagenwerk with urgent transport goods. The Emden airfield is also used to supply offshore wind farms .

Four companies have settled in Emden and operated over 15 helicopters in 2013. In addition to photo, film and sightseeing flights, including to the offshore wind farms, they take on emergency evacuations (patient transport) and operate the sea pilot transfer service.

With the offshore industry 64 new jobs have been created and a total of 133 permanent jobs on site. The new offshore wind farms in particular have led to an increase in air traffic since 2009. The number of commercial flights rose by 16.4 percent to 7,043, including 3,768 helicopter flights to the wind farms at sea. The total number of flights was 9,402. Since then, the number of flight movements has continued to increase: from 11,100 in 2011 to 12,096 in 2012 to 13,504 in 2013.

operator

The airfield is operated by Flugplatz Emden GmbH , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Emden (SWE) and thus ultimately the city of Emden itself, which is the sole shareholder of SWE . Any losses are borne by the municipal utilities (and thus the city), which see the airfield as part of the necessary infrastructure.

Directions and surroundings

The airfield is located five kilometers northeast of Emden city center on the A 31 , exit Emden-Mitte . The Emden airfield has joined forces with other, similarly large airfields in Germany in a working group, the aim of which is to encourage companies to settle in the vicinity of the airfields. There is an industrial area in the immediate vicinity of the Emden airfield, extensive industrial areas (with potential for space) are just a few minutes away by car.

Incidents

On February 8, 2011, a Britten Norman Islander (D-IOLO) of the Ostfriesische Lufttransport (OLT) had to make an emergency landing at Emden airfield. The machine already had suspension problems when it started on Borkum and declared an air emergency . A little later, the pilot was able to make an emergency landing on a foam carpet. The pilot and the eight passengers were uninjured.
