The airfield Borkum is the airfield of the city and the East Frisian North Sea island of Borkum .

history

The airfield was built in 1927. It initially served civil aviation. For example, a Dutch airline landed here on the Amsterdam - Stockholm route . The airport is on the island in the Ostland area . Ostland has been used militarily by the navy to a considerable extent since the German Empire . With the armament of the National Socialist state, the airfield was taken over by the air force of the Wehrmacht , which set up an air base command . From June to September 1941, was here 1./JG 52 stationed (Season 1 Fighter Wing 52), February-March 1942, the 1./JG 1 . There were also training relays here.

After the end of the Second World War , the British occupying forces initially intended to destroy the airfield - like almost all other military installations on the island. However, the municipality of Borkum campaigned for the preservation and civil use, as it did for other transport infrastructure built by the Wehrmacht that could be used for civilian purposes.

In the first decade of the 21st century, scheduled flights were also offered to Düsseldorf and Berlin . This offer no longer exists.

Directions and infrastructure

The airfield is located between the town center and the district of Ostland . The reception building also contains a small waiting area. There is a hotel right at the airport. There is a bus from the Borkumer Kleinbahn . The Borkum flight school is also located at the airfield.
